Furniture designer and TV host Angelo Surmelis wants to help make over the downtown L.A. retail scene.
Surmelis, who created his angelo:HOME brand in 2008, last month opened his first boutique store. It’s in the Eastern Columbia building in downtown’s theater district and features a small selection of his 1,000-piece collection of paisley loveseats, chenille ottomans and filigree dining chairs.

Designer Angelo Surmelis, creator of the brand angelo:HOME, visited the Las Vegas Market Monday to celebrate the introduction of his exclusive licensed lighting line with AF Lighting.
Located in showroom A-406, AF Lighting debuted the extensive collection, including a colorful array of chandeliers, decorative and task lamps, uplights and pendants, using materials such as hand-blown glass and recycled plastic.

Designers’ predictions for the year ahead

Design trends for 2011 will include a mix of styles and functions, from repurposed furnishings and LED lighting to deep-hued decor and fashion-inspired decorating. So say six interior designers we asked to predict the direction design will take in the new year.
While some of the professionals took their cue from the state of the economy and others focused on color, all agreed we can look forward to a well-designed future.

A: I know people say this all the time, but my days are not at all typical. If they were I’d be rocking myself in the corner somewhere….It all changes depending on the day. The few things they always have in common are:
-they’re never 8 hour days (I work throughout the night and I’ve been know to answer e-mail at 4am from China)
-food is always on the agenda…planning my next meal while having one.
-there will be equal doses of frustration and glee throughout the day.

You could take a page from my book and move art from one room to another, or you can create your own wall masterpiece with fabric. “Hang a curtain rod on a feature wall and drape inexpensive fabric in a great fall color,” advises interior and furniture designer Angelo Surmelis, who sells his wares on QVC, including a set of three paisley imprinted ottomans. “This brings some color into your room and it adds a layer of texture, which is perfect for fall.”

SFC to launch first consumer campaign
HIGH POINT—- The Sustainable Furnishings Council is set to announce its first consumer marketing campaign, featuring noted interior and product designers who will help increase awareness of eco-friendly home furnishings. The group is holding a press conference at 9:30 a.m. Monday in the International Home Furnishings Center’s 11th floor Green Wing, Ballroom B, to discuss the program and conduct a roundtable discussion with some of the designers.
The campaign centers on a new SFC DesigninGreen Leadership Team of designers who are committed to promoting sustainable practices. SFC officials said the effort will be the nonprofit industry coalition’s first big, concentrated effort to reach consumers since it was created in 2006.

(That cumbersome name might put you off, but the moderate price point, $249 to $649, most likely won’t.) The initial 18 pieces, including sofas, ottomans, upholstered chairs and loveseats, are the work of Los Angeles designer Angelo Surmelis. The set of ottomans, shown, are 18, 23 and 28 inches in diameter and are covered with a woven poly/linen chenille; the set costs $290.

Designer Angelo Surmelis, host of HGTV’s ‘Rate My Space’ show has always wanted to create the type of furniture he wanted to own. The kind of furniture where a person did not make any kind of compromises in style and quality because they had little money. Surmelis, along with business partner Tom Erdman (General Manager for furniture company Handy Living) have brought that dream to reality.
