CNN iReport - Who Taught Angelo Surmelis To Love Food

From Celebbuzzz on CNN’s iReport.
While we all love to eat, food has somehow taken on many roles and can be a force of “good” or “evil” depending on the day, the person and of course the mirror one is looking into after a meal that might have been a wee bit indulgent. But for many like my buddy Angelo, it is connected to his past as well as his present and future as it truly feeds his soul. To say he has hit the ground running in the name of all things design would be a huge understatement and his sense of humor and endearing personality are only out done by his remarkable talent and of course his love of food.
In fact, he was so inspired to share his self-proclaimed “foodie” status with me that he gave me a gastronomical tour and prepared one of his favorite Greek dishes, spanakopita perhaps the one that feeds his inspiration to create the many beautiful spaces he is known for!

In his own words!
“Food has been a part of my life for as far back as I can remember. Both my parents worked in my Uncle’s restaurant… My Dad was a short order cook and my Mom was a waitress, and after school I’d hang out at the counter to make ice cream shakes for the customers. Being Greek added a whole other level for food in my life, it was always around… even after a day of working in a restaurant full-time my Mom would always go home and make a home cooked meal for the entire family and spanakopita was my favorite. She never followed a recipe and helping her in the kitchen allowed me to be part mad scientist and part CSI investigator, as I made mental notes of the ingredients. No matter what the variation it was all tasty good times! My love of cooking and food was only heightened by my parent’s passion for it. So, today I’m making my favorite version of the classic Greek dish - spanakopita.”
