Designer Angelo Surmelis talks about angelo:Home for QVC
by: Andrea Campbell
Home and Living admits to having a crush on a TV designer. Oh, it’s not because he’s on TV, but we’re smitten because we think he’s swell. And just to show you, we’re running an interview with: Angelo Surmelis.
Q.: Who is Angelo Surmelis?
A.: Ha. Still trying to figure that one out. i’ll let others tell that story—I just want to love what I do.
Q.: Home and Living found out that you were a child genius for décor, can you speak to that?
A.: I think “genius” is a strong word. It was less that and more of being compelled. One of my earliest memories was leaning up against the walls of our apartment in Greece thinking that if I leaned and punched with all my strength I could move the walls. I was about 4 at the time. Since my moving walls at will “power” did not work, I resorted to dragging furniture around our apartment when I was six when we were living in Chicago. I was fascinated by space and how it could morph from an early age.
Q.: Let’s talk about your new line of home furnishings for QVC—congratulations—what are the details?
A.: Thank you! This really is all about making style affordable and accessible to all. QVC reaches the largest TV audience who appreciate design, style and value. This was the perfect fit. Also, QVC allowed me to get one step closer to my vision of creating angelo:Home for all of your homes. What started as only upholstered furniture about a year ago now includes bedding, drapes, rugs, throws and sheets. I have been designing products my whole life, it’s just that no one but me has ever seen them. My mom said that even when I was in my crib I tried to redo my surroundings and she’s convinced I was determined to change the sheets in there.
